Around 500 people a month search for a mechanic in Dunedin, and as many again for a WOF. This guide looks at mechanics in Dunedin through Google’s eyes: what drivers search, which garages Google shows and why, what a WOF costs according to Google, and what any workshop can do to be found. At the end, we run a free SEO audit of three real Dunedin garage websites.
Just looking for a mechanic in Dunedin?
- WOF prices: in September 2026, Google showed Dunedin WOF inspections at roughly $50 to $95, depending on whether you choose a testing station or a garage. Check the garage’s own price list before you book.
- Ask before work starts: a written quote, what happens if the car fails the WOF, and whether you will be called before extra work is done.
- Check credentials: many Dunedin garages show MTA membership on their signs and websites.
- Read recent reviews, not just the star rating. Almost every garage in the city is rated 4.5 or higher.
Key takeaways for garage owners
- “Mechanic dunedin”, “car service dunedin”, “wof dunedin” and “tyres dunedin” each get around 500 searches a month. Across New Zealand, “wof near me” gets around 50,000.
- Google’s AI answer to “How much does a WoF cost in Dunedin?” named one local garage and quoted its price, taken from the price list on its website.
- A garage with only 6 reviews sits in the Maps top three, and a garage from Dunedin, Florida, with 671 reviews appears in the local list.
- Our free audit of three Dunedin garage websites found the same quick wins again and again: prices, a WOF page, clear hours and one consistent address.

What Dunedin drivers search for
Car searches are steadier than in most trades. Every car needs a WOF, a service and tyres, whether the owner likes it or not. That makes demand predictable, and every search is a job someone else will get if you are not there.
| Search phrase | Monthly searches | What the driver wants |
|---|---|---|
| mechanic dunedin | around 500 | A garage for a repair or a problem |
| car service dunedin | around 500 | A routine service, often with a WOF |
| wof dunedin | around 500 | A WOF inspection, soon |
| tyres dunedin | around 500 | New tyres, usually on price |
| auto electrician dunedin | around 500 | A specialist for an electrical fault |
| car repairs dunedin | around 50 | A specific repair |
| wof near me (NZ-wide) | around 50,000 | The nearest place that can do a WOF |
| wof cost nz (NZ-wide) | around 5,000 | A price before booking |
up to NZ$48
What advertisers pay for one top-of-page click on “car mechanic near me” from Dunedin. “Mechanic near me” reaches about NZ$36. Yet a click on “mechanic dunedin” costs only about NZ$1.90–9.50, and “wof dunedin” about NZ$0.90–6.30. The same customer, very different prices.

Read the full breakdown: how car searches split in Dunedin
- General searches such as “mechanic dunedin” and “car repairs dunedin”. Answered first by Maps, then by garage websites, lists and community threads.
- WOF searches. “Wof dunedin” gets around 500 a month. Nationally, “wof near me” gets around 50,000, “warrant of fitness near me” and “wof cost nz” around 5,000 each, and “cheap wof near me”, “car wof near me”, “wof check near me” and “wof service near me” around 500 each. Many drivers search without the city name, so Google relies on location and your profile to decide who to show.
- Service and repair searches such as brakes, servicing and auto electrical work. Nationally, “brake repair”, “brake repair near me” and “brake mechanic near me” each get around 500 searches a month.
- Tyre searches are big in Dunedin: “tyres dunedin”, “tyre shop dunedin”, “cheap tyres dunedin” and “tyres mosgiel” each get around 500 a month.
- Name searches. One local tyre and auto business is searched by name around 500 times a month, as often as “tyres dunedin” itself. Google also suggests Auto Repair Otago and Complete Auto Repairs by name.
- Price searches. “People also search for” includes prices, cheapest and best mechanic in Dunedin, and for WOFs: prices, cost, cheap, appointment and phone number.
What page one looks like today
We searched as a customer in Dunedin in September 2026 for “mechanic dunedin nz” and “wof dunedin nz”.
- The Maps three first. Garages with 366, 6 and 147 reviews, then a sponsored listing, and a new button: “Have AI get prices”.
- A long “People also ask” block. Hourly rates, service costs and how to spot a dishonest mechanic, answered mostly by national and overseas websites.
- Organic results. A national chain’s Dunedin page, local garage websites, a MoneyHub list, Yelp, Reddit and a Facebook group thread.
- For WOFs, AI first. An AI Overview naming two testing stations, then price answers and a business panel.

Kiwi tip
Look above the business list: Google now offers “Have AI get prices”, collecting quotes from garages on the customer’s behalf. Clear prices on your website and profile, and someone who answers the phone, matter more than ever.
Read the full breakdown: each layer of page one
Maps. The full Places list shows around twenty garages, almost all rated 4.3 to 5.0. The top three had 366, 6 and 147 reviews, so volume alone does not decide the order. The garage with 6 reviews showed “Open 24 hours”. Two businesses paid for sponsored places in the list: a tyre and auto business and a parts store.
A garage from another Dunedin. The Places list for “mechanic dunedin nz” included a garage in Dunedin, Florida, with 671 reviews, showing “Open” in the middle of the New Zealand night because it was daytime in Florida.
People also ask. For “mechanic dunedin nz”, Google answered hourly rates from national automotive websites and MoneyHub, and “How to spot a dishonest mechanic?” mostly from American websites. For “wof dunedin nz”, the block drifted into tourism: what Dunedin is famous for, how to pronounce Dunedin, and whether Christchurch is better. Google fills gaps when local answers are thin.
Organic. For “mechanic dunedin nz”, a Yelp list came first, then a national chain’s Dunedin branch page with “Mechanic Dunedin, Wof & Car Servicing” as its title. Local garage websites followed, together with MoneyHub’s “best mechanics in Dunedin” list, a Reddit thread with 30+ comments and a 100% Dunedin Businesses Facebook thread. For WOFs, testing stations, garage WOF pages, a MoneyHub WOF list and an ad using the domain dunedinmechanics.nz all competed.
Where is your garage right now?
Five minutes on your phone, logged out, decides your route.
- Search “mechanic dunedin”. Are you in the three garages Google shows? If not, tap “More places” and count.
- Search “wof dunedin”. Is your WOF page anywhere on page one?
- Ask Google “How much does a WoF cost in Dunedin?” Is your price quoted?
- Search your own name. Is your website first? Do your hours, address and phone match everywhere?
- Route A: hard to findNot in the local results for your main searches. Fix your profile, hours and address first.
Start at stop 1 - Route B: listed, not bookedYou appear, but others get the work. Publish prices, build a WOF page, collect reviews.
Start at stop 3 - Route C: close to the topYou are in the top ten. Now it is trust, bookings and being named by locals.
Start at stop 6
The roadmap: ten stops
A short version for busy people, and a full breakdown for those who want the detail.
1. Google Business Profile: the right category and real services
All routes · one-off setup, then monthly
All three garages in the Maps top three use “Mechanic” as their main category. Others use “Car repair and maintenance service” or “Auto repair shop”. List every service you offer, from WOFs and servicing to brakes, tyres and diagnostics, and add photos of your own workshop.
Read the full breakdown
- Primary category. “Mechanic” matches the most common search. Add “Auto repair shop”, “Tyre shop”, “Auto electrical service” or similar as secondary categories only for work you really do.
- Services. WOF inspections, servicing, brakes, suspension, batteries, air conditioning, pre-purchase inspections. Strong Dunedin profiles list them all.
- Photos. The best profiles show the building, the signage and the bays. One shows WOF and MTA signs in the first photo, answering two questions before the customer asks.
- Products and services link. Some profiles link to their website’s services or products page. Use it if you have one.
2. Hours and address that match everywhere
Route A · one-off, check monthly
In our sample, one garage’s profile showed “Open 24 hours” because its card fuel pumps never close, while the workshop keeps normal hours. Another website listed two different street addresses. Small mismatches confuse customers and Google alike.
Read the full breakdown
- Your opening time on Google should match your website to the minute. We found an 8 AM start on one website and 8:30 AM on the same garage’s profile.
- If part of your business has different hours, such as fuel, parts or a shop, say so clearly on the profile and website, and check Google’s “More hours” options for your category.
- Show one address, the same on your website, profile, invoices and directories. If you have moved, update every old listing.
- Set special hours for public holidays, so Google does not show you as open when the workshop is closed.
3. Publish your prices and get quoted
Routes A and B · one-off, update yearly
Google’s answer to “How much does a WoF cost in Dunedin?” named Complete Auto Repairs and its $65 WOF price, and showed the garage’s price list page as a source. It is the clearest proof in this series: publish your prices, and Google’s AI will use them.

Read the full breakdown
- A simple table in text (not an image): WOF, WOF with a check, basic and full service, brake pads, wheel alignment, pre-purchase inspection, diagnostic scan.
- Say whether prices include GST, and which vehicles may cost more, such as European, diesel or 4×4.
- Explain your hourly labour rate and what a WOF re-check costs.
- Date the page (“Prices updated October 2026”) and keep it current.
For “mechanic dunedin nz”, Google’s hourly-rate answers came from national automotive websites and MoneyHub. A short “How much does a mechanic cost in Dunedin?” section on your own site is your chance to become that source.
4. A real WOF page
Route B · one-off build, update yearly
“Wof dunedin” is searched as often as “mechanic dunedin”, yet testing stations, national chains and lists fill most of that page. Independent garages that rank for it have a dedicated WOF page with the price, the process and how to book.
Read the full breakdown
- A title such as “WOF Dunedin | Warrant of Fitness at [Your Garage], [Suburb]”.
- Your WOF price, how long it takes, whether you need to book, and what happens if the car fails.
- What inspectors check, in plain words: tyres, lights, brakes, seatbelts, rust, windscreen.
- Motorbikes, trailers, caravans or light commercial vehicles if you inspect them. “Motorbike wof near me” gets around 500 searches a month nationally.
- A booking button and your phone number near the top.
Check dates and rules on older pages. One garage website we read still describes WOF frequency changes from 2014 as “new”. For the technical side of building and ranking service pages, see our SEO services in NZ.
5. Reviews: steady and specific
All routes · after every job
The Maps leader has 366 reviews. Most Dunedin garages sit between 30 and 150. Reviews that mention the job and the price, such as “cost less than quoted” or “fair pricing”, answer the fear most drivers bring to a garage.
Read the full breakdown
- Ask at the counter when the customer collects the car, and text the review link the same day.
- Put a QR code on the invoice and on the WOF reminder.
- Reply to every review. Answer the rare bad one calmly and with facts.
- Show a few real Google reviews on your website with a “Leave a review” link, as one Dunedin garage does.
Google quotes review lines under each listing: “Booked my car in for Monday and got it back all fixed by Wednesday”, “Brilliant service, brilliant team, fair pricing, and great communication”. Those are the words people are scanning for. Never buy reviews or offer discounts for them.
6. Make booking easy
Routes B and C · one-off
A WOF is a planned job, and planned jobs get booked online. One Dunedin garage puts “Book a WOF or Service” as the first button on its site, linked to an online booking system. Google shows a “Schedule” button on profiles with a booking link.
Read the full breakdown
- Add your booking link to your Google profile, so the “Schedule” or “Book” button appears.
- Separate routine bookings (WOF, service) from repair enquiries. A repair form that asks for the rego and a description of the problem saves a phone call.
- Answer the phone, or call back fast. With “Have AI get prices”, Google may be the one asking.
7. Claim your profile and make it clear which Dunedin
All routes · one-off
A Florida garage with 671 reviews appeared in our Dunedin, New Zealand, results. And for “wof dunedin nz”, Google showed a local WOF centre with 272 reviews whose panel had no website, a general category and an “Own this business?” link.

Read the full breakdown
An unclaimed or incomplete profile still collects reviews, but the business cannot reply, add a website, fix the category or add services. If you have never logged into your Google Business Profile, search your business name and look for “Own this business?”.

- Use “Dunedin” with “Otago” or “NZ” in your page titles and footer.
- Show a full New Zealand address and an 03 phone number on every page.
- Name the suburbs your customers come from. One garage lists fourteen, from Kaikorai Valley to Mosgiel.
- Add local business structured data with your NZ address. Your web developer can do it in an hour.
8. Earn trust before the car arrives
Routes B and C · one-off
“How to spot a dishonest mechanic?” appeared on page one for “mechanic dunedin nz”. Drivers arrive worried. Show MTA membership, how long you have been local, who works on the cars, and how you handle extra work.
Read the full breakdown
- MTA membership, warranty and insurance partners, and qualifications, in text, not only as logos.
- A “How we work” section: written quotes, a call before any extra work, old parts shown on request.
- A team page with real photos. Drivers trust the person, not the logo.
- Keep facts consistent. One site said “over 18 years” while its profile said “15+ years in business”. Both may be true, but consistent facts read as reliable.
9. Be the garage locals name
All routes · daily check, ten minutes
Reddit and Facebook threads asking “What is a decent WOF place in Dunedin?” and “Best place for WOF?” rank on page one, with specific garages named in the top answers. MoneyHub’s lists of Dunedin mechanics and WOF stations rank too, and link to the garages they include.

Read the full breakdown
All three websites in our audit below are linked from local “best of” lists such as MoneyHub, Intently or TopChoice. Lists like these usually include garages with strong, recent reviews, so the review habit from stop 5 pays twice.
In local groups, follow the rules, answer car questions helpfully, and let happy customers do the recommending. Directories such as White Pages, Yellow, Finda and trade listings add visibility; keep your name, address and phone identical on all of them.
10. Quotes, ads and measurement
Route C · every enquiry, monthly review
Ads on “near me” searches can cost up to NZ$48 a click, while “mechanic dunedin” and “wof dunedin” are cheap. If you advertise, bid on the local phrases and your suburbs, and measure every booking.

Read the full breakdown
We built Quote & Job Organiser for tradespeople who quote on the spot. There is no automotive preset yet, but presets only set starter labels and items: you can add your own services and rates, create a quote in a couple of minutes and turn accepted quotes into scheduled jobs. It was built first for Australia; we adapt it for New Zealand quickly on request, including 15% GST. It is in closed testing now, so get in touch if you would like to try it.
- Ads: target WOF, servicing and your suburbs, schedule them for workshop hours, and exclude job and DIY searches.
- Measure: ask every new customer how they found you, and check calls, bookings and website clicks in your Google profile monthly.
6 Dunedin garages and what to copy
We looked at how six Dunedin garages appear on Google in September 2026. Each shows a lesson any workshop can use. Ratings, review counts and hours are as shown on Google at the time.
1. Pit Stop Dunedin

What works: the most reviews of any Dunedin garage we saw, first in Maps, and a branch page titled “Mechanic Dunedin, Wof & Car Servicing” that ranks near the top of the organic results for “mechanic dunedin nz” and appears again for WOF searches.
Copy this: a page title that simply names the searches: mechanic, the city, WOF, servicing.
2. Brock Johnston Automotive

What works: in the Maps top three with only six reviews, and its website also ranks on page one. The site is modern, clear and quick on mobile, with online WOF booking and the headline “Trusted Mechanics in Dunedin”.
Opportunity: a business operating since 1980 deserves more than six reviews. We cover the full picture in the audit below.
3. Complete Auto Repairs

What works: in the Maps top three, named by Google’s AI for WOF prices thanks to a detailed public price list, and a distinctive blue-and-orange building that makes its photos instantly recognisable.
Opportunity: its website did not appear in the organic top 10 for “mechanic dunedin nz” when we checked. The audit below shows why that may be.
4. PD Auto Services

What works: a near-perfect rating and reviews that talk about price: “Cheap, fast, polite”, “the work done ended up costing less than quoted”. A detailed services list covers air conditioning, diagnostics, body and trim and brakes.
Opportunity: the lead photo looks like a general stock-style image of an engine. Photos of the real workshop and team would match the personal service the reviews describe.
5. St Kilda Automotive

What works: the first photos show WOF signage and MTA approval, the profile links to its products and services page, and its website ranks on page one for “mechanic dunedin nz” with a description that names WOFs, repairs and 4×4 servicing.
Copy this: photos that answer “Do they do WOFs?” and “Can I trust them?” at a glance.
6. Sims Brothers Garage

What works: named in the top answer of the r/dunedin thread “Best place for WOF?”, which ranks on page one for “wof dunedin nz”. Sixty years of word of mouth, now visible inside Google’s results.
Opportunity: its own website did not appear on page one for either search we ran. A WOF page could turn that reputation into direct traffic.

Free SEO audit: 3 Dunedin garage websites
We picked three different garages: one quoted by Google’s AI, one in the Maps top three with very few reviews, and one established workshop ranking on page one. We used only public tools: Google search, Google Business Profile, PageSpeed Insights and Ahrefs’ free backlink checker, in September 2026. None of them are our clients, and this is a snapshot, not a full audit.
| Check | Complete Auto Repairs | Brock Johnston Automotive | Centre City Auto Repairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform | WordPress (older version) | Wix | Yellow site builder |

| Service pages | 16 separate pages | One services page | Two (general, 4×4) |
| Prices published | Yes, full price list | No | No |
| WOF page | Yes | No, one line | No |
| Booking | Contact page | Online WOF and service booking | Phone and email |
| Reviews on site | Testimonials page | Google reviews and review link | None |
| Mobile speed (PageSpeed) | Not tested | 77 | 57 |
| Google profile | 4.6 (147), Mechanic | 5.0 (6), Mechanic | 4.3 (74), Car repair and maintenance service |
| Linking websites (Ahrefs) | 690 | 697, mostly automated | 293 |
Audit 1: Complete Auto Repairs
What works: the best content of the three. Sixteen service pages, a WOF page, a reviews page, a blog, and a full price list with WOF, servicing packages, brakes and wheel alignment, all including GST. That price list is why Google’s AI quoted them.
Quick wins:
- Fix the main heading. In the home page code we read, the H1 headings are slider captions containing only a full stop. A clear H1 such as “Mechanics in Dunedin South: WOF, Servicing and Repairs” tells Google what the page is about.
- Sharpen the title. “Dunedin South’s Trusted Car Mechanics” is friendly but has no WOF and no brand name. Something like “Mechanic & WOF Dunedin | Complete Auto Repairs, Hillside Road” matches what people search.
- Refresh dated copy. The footer says © 2014, the home page was last updated in 2019, and it still calls 2014 WOF rule changes “new”. The site also reports an older WordPress version, worth updating for security.
- Match the facts. The website says 8 AM to 5 PM and “over 18 years”; the Google profile says it opens at 8:30 AM and shows “15+ years in business”.
- Make the service packages readable. In a text reading of the price page, the Budget, Standard and Premium columns come out empty, which suggests the ticks are icons. Short text lists under each package would let Google read what is included.
Audit 2: Brock Johnston Automotive
What works: a clean, modern site with a clear H1, “Trusted Mechanics in Dunedin”, online WOF and service booking, a repair form that asks for the rego, MTA membership, warranty partners, real Google reviews with a “Leave a Review” link, and a list of fourteen suburbs. Mobile PageSpeed 77, SEO score 100.
Quick wins:
- Give each service its own page. WOF, servicing, brakes and the rest share one page with one line each. A WOF page alone could compete for around 500 searches a month.
- Add prices, at least for WOFs and standard services.
- Clarify hours on Google. The profile shows “Open 24 hours”, which is right for the card fuel pumps, while the workshop is open Monday to Friday, 8 to 5. Stating workshop hours clearly on the profile avoids disappointed night-time callers.
- Ask for reviews. Six reviews after more than 40 years in business. The review link is already on the site; now it needs a habit behind it.
- Ignore the junk links. Most of the 697 linking websites are automated “SEO checker” pages that list thousands of domains. The business almost certainly did nothing to get them, and Google generally ignores links like these. Nobody needs to pay to “clean” them.

Audit 3: Centre City Auto Repairs
What works: it already ranks on page one for “mechanic dunedin nz”. The page title and text mention Dunedin and “service workshop” clearly, there is a 4×4 page, a team page and a video, and PageSpeed’s SEO check scored 100.
Quick wins:
- Speed up the main image. On mobile, the largest element took 14.3 seconds to appear in PageSpeed’s test, for a performance score of 57. Compressing the slider photos is likely the biggest single fix.
- One address. The page contains two street addresses, 124 St Andrew Street and 420 Cumberland Street. The Google profile uses St Andrew Street. Removing the other avoids confusing customers and Google.
- Remove template text. The slider still carries placeholder text such as “Slide Title” and “Write your caption here” in the page code.
- Build WOF and prices pages, and a page for the “student specials” the home page mentions. Dunedin is a student city, and that offer deserves to be found.
- Work on reviews. The profile’s 4.3 is the lowest in the local list, and the category is “Car repair and maintenance service” rather than “Mechanic”. Calm replies, fresh reviews and testing the “Mechanic” category could lift both.

The pattern across all three: none is badly built, and each is missing different pieces the others already have. Put Complete’s price list, Brock’s booking and reviews block, and Centre City’s page-one presence together, and you have the garage website Google would struggle to ignore.
Your work list
The whole roadmap as a list. One-off jobs build the foundation; ongoing ones keep the bays full.
| Task | Type | How often | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claim and complete your Google profile: “Mechanic” category, services, photos | One-off | Check monthly | Decides which searches you appear in |

| Price list in text, with GST noted | One-off | Update yearly | Gets you quoted by Google’s AI |
| WOF page with price, process and booking | One-off | Update yearly | Around 500 local searches a month |
| Online booking linked from your profile | One-off | Check quarterly | Turns searches into booked jobs |
| Trust section: MTA, team, how you handle extra work | One-off | Update when things change | Answers the “dishonest mechanic” worry |
| Clear “Dunedin, NZ” signals and structured data | One-off | Check yearly | Separates you from Dunedin, Florida |
| Ask for a review | Ongoing | Every collection | The Maps leader has 366 |
| Reply to every review | Ongoing | Within two days | Protects your rating |
| Help in local Facebook groups and Reddit | Ongoing | Daily, ten minutes | Threads rank on page one |
| Track bookings and sources | Ongoing | Monthly | Shows what works |
Common mistake
Writing “competitive prices” instead of actual prices. Google cannot quote an adjective. The one Dunedin garage with a real price list was the one Google’s AI named.
A worked scenario
A three-bay garage in Mosgiel with 30 reviews, no prices online and no WOF page (Route B). They publish a price list, build a WOF page with online booking, and ask every customer for a review at collection. At 25 cars a week, about 100 a month, if one in five leaves a review that is 20 a month, and they pass 100 reviews in four months. This is an illustrative scenario, not a client case study or a guaranteed result.
Drivers want three things from a garage: a fair price, an honest answer and their car back on time. Put the first two on your website, and Google will help with the rest.

Questions garage owners ask us
A complete Google profile, consistent hours and address, and a steady flow of reviews can lift you in the local results within a few months. Ranking a website in the organic top 10 for “mechanic dunedin” usually takes six to twelve months of consistent work.
Yes. In September 2026, Google’s AI answer to “How much does a WoF cost in Dunedin?” named the one local garage with a clear price list and quoted its WOF price. Publish prices as text, note whether they include GST, and keep them up to date.
The Maps top three for “mechanic dunedin nz” had 366, 147 and 6 reviews in September 2026, so volume is not everything. A steady flow of recent reviews that mention the job and the price does the most good.
Yes, if you do WOFs. “Wof dunedin” is searched around 500 times a month, as often as “mechanic dunedin”, and “wof near me” around 50,000 times a month across New Zealand. A page with your price, the process and online booking gives you a real chance to rank.
There is a Dunedin in Florida, and Google sometimes mixes them up. Use “Dunedin, Otago” or “NZ” in your page titles, show your full New Zealand address and 03 number, and add local business structured data so Google knows exactly where you are.
