SEO for Plumbers in Dunedin: A Roadmap to Google’s Top 10

When a pipe bursts at 10 pm, nobody compares ten websites. They search “plumber dunedin”, look at three names on the map and call the first one that says it is open. This roadmap shows Dunedin plumbers what customers search, what page one looks like right now, and the route into the top 10 in one of the city’s most competitive trades.

Key takeaways

  • “Plumber dunedin” gets around 500 searches a month, and so does “bathroom renovation dunedin”, a bigger job most plumbing sites barely mention.
  • The Maps leaders range from 45 to 508 Google reviews. A plumber with 45 five-star reviews sits in the top three next to a 90-year-old firm.
  • “Open 24 hours” and emergency services shown on the profile decide who gets the urgent calls.
  • Google’s AI answers about plumbing prices quote American, UK and Auckland sources, not Dunedin plumbers. A clear local pricing page can change that.
  • There is another Dunedin, in Florida, and its plumbing company appears in New Zealand results. Saying “Dunedin, New Zealand” clearly matters.

Read the full breakdown: how plumbing searches split in Dunedin
  • General searches such as “plumber dunedin” and “plumbers dunedin nz”. Mostly answered by Maps. Your Google Business Profile competes here first, your home page second.
  • Urgent searches such as “emergency plumber dunedin”, and in Google’s suggestions “24 hour emergency plumber dunedin nz” and “emergency plumber dunedin nz 24 7”. Small in volume, highest in value: the customer calls within minutes and rarely haggles.
  • Project searches such as “bathroom renovation dunedin”, as big as “plumber dunedin” itself. Planned, researched and high-value. Few plumbing websites have a proper page for it.
  • Service searches such as hot water cylinders, leak detection, blocked drains and gas fitting. Each needs its own page with real photos.
  • Name searches. Two Dunedin plumbing firms are searched by name around 500 times a month each, as often as the whole “plumber dunedin” category. A known name is a huge advantage, and it is built by years of good work and consistent branding.

Google’s “People also ask” shows what customers worry about: how much a plumber costs per hour in New Zealand, what a normal call-out charge is, how much an emergency plumbing service costs, and which plumbers are reputable. “People also search for” adds prices, cheap plumbers, best plumbers, Mosgiel, gas fitters and reviews.

What page one looks like today

We searched as a customer in Dunedin in September 2026, on mobile and desktop.

  • Local plumbers’ ads first. Three Dunedin firms pay to appear above everything, pushing same-day and 24/7 service.
  • The Maps three. On desktop, plumbers with 508, 122 and 45 reviews, all showing “Open 24 hours”. On mobile, a 4.9-rated plumber with 70 reviews led for “plumber”.
  • Organic results. Mostly local plumbers’ own websites, plus a “best plumbers in Dunedin” list, White Pages and community threads.
  • A “Discussions and forums” block. Facebook and Reddit threads where locals recommend plumbers by name.

Kiwi tip

Look under the business names in the emergency search: Google adds a line such as “Provides: Plumbing Emergency” or “Provides: Emergency Plumber Service”. It reflects services listed on those profiles. If you take emergency work, make sure your profile says so in the same plain words.

Read the full breakdown: each layer of page one

Ads. For both “plumber dunedin nz” and “emergency plumber dunedin nz”, three local firms ran ads: plumbing, drain clearing and 24/7 callouts. One even appeared in the local “Businesses” list as a sponsored heating and cooling contractor. Plumbing is a trade where local businesses already compete with money.

Maps. The full Places list shows well over a dozen plumbers across Dunedin, Mosgiel and the Taieri. Review counts range from a few dozen to more than 500, and most leaders display “Open 24 hours”. Review snippets under each name read like mini adverts: “Came immediately and fixed the blocked pipe”, “they came within half a day and did an excellent job”.

Organic. Local plumbing websites hold most places, including pages built specifically for emergencies, such as “Emergency Plumber Dunedin 24 Hours”. A MoneyHub list of the best plumbers in Dunedin and a White Pages directory also rank.

Community. Google shows Facebook threads from the 100% Dunedin Businesses group, such as “Who can recommend a cheap but efficient plumber in Dunedin?”, and a Reddit r/dunedin thread titled “Best plumber”. In those threads, locals name specific firms. Being named there puts you on page one inside someone else’s result.

The roadmap: ten stops

A short version for busy people, and a full breakdown for those who want the detail.

1. Google Business Profile: services in plain words

All routes · one-off setup, then monthly

Category “Plumber”, a full list of services, a genuine service area, and photos of real jobs. Every strong Dunedin profile we looked at lists its services in detail: leak detection, faucet repairs, shower and toilet installation, drain cleaning, water heaters.

Read the full breakdown
  • Primary category: Plumber. Add “Gas installation service” or “Drainage service” as secondary categories only if you genuinely do that work.
  • Services. Add every service you offer, including emergency plumbing, hot water cylinders, leak detection, blocked drains, gas fitting and bathroom renovations. Google uses them to match searches and to label listings.
  • Service area. Dunedin city, Mosgiel, the Taieri, the Peninsula, Port Chalmers, wherever you really go. The leaders show “Serves Dunedin and nearby areas”.
  • Appointments link. One leading profile links straight to online booking. If you take bookings online, add the link.
  • Photos. Real cylinders, real bathrooms, real vans. Stock images of hands and spanners tell the customer nothing about you.

2. 24/7, honestly

Route A · one-off, check monthly

If you take after-hours calls, set your Google hours to show it and make sure your website says the same thing. In our check, one firm’s website promised 24/7 service while its Google profile showed “Closed”. Customers trust the profile first.

Read the full breakdown

Google shows “Open 24 hours” in green under your name, and customers searching at night often tap the “Open now” filter. A profile that says “Closed · Opens 8 AM” simply disappears from those searches, whatever your website says.

  • Only show 24 hours if someone genuinely answers the phone at 2 am.
  • Use the same phone number for after-hours calls on Google, your website and your van.
  • Explain your after-hours call-out charge on your website. It builds trust and answers one of Google’s most common plumbing questions.
  • Set special hours for public holidays, so Google does not show you as closed when you are working.

3. Reviews: quality beats age

All routes · after every job

One firm has more than 500 reviews and 90 years in business. Yet a plumber with 45 five-star reviews sits beside it in the top three. You do not need a century; you need a steady flow of great reviews that describe the job.

Read the full breakdown
  • Ask when the problem is fixed and the customer is relieved: water back on, drain flowing, hot shower again.
  • Text the review link the same day and add a QR code to your invoice.
  • Suggest, do not script: “It helps if you mention what we fixed and where.”
  • Reply to every review, and answer the rare bad one calmly with facts. A few one-star reviews without replies can pull an otherwise strong rating down.

Google quotes review lines under each listing: “He arrived on time and the work was finished as quoted”, “Very prompt efficient service, good communication and price”. Those are the words customers are looking for. Never buy reviews or offer discounts for them.

4. Answer the call-out question

Routes A and B · one-off, update yearly

“How much is a plumber per hour in NZ?” and “What is a normal call-out charge?” appear on page one for every plumbing search we ran. A clear pricing page answers them, earns trust, and catches all the “prices” and “cheap plumber” searches.

Google now answers these questions itself with AI Overviews. In our check, the answers were built from an American directory, Reddit, a UK home services site and Auckland plumbers. Not one Dunedin plumber was quoted. A clear local pricing and FAQ page is your chance to become the source.

Google AI Overview answers about plumber hourly rates and call-out charges in New Zealand citing non-Dunedin sources
Google’s AI Overviews answer price questions, September 2026. No Dunedin plumber was cited.
Read the full breakdown
  • Your call-out fee and what it includes (for example, the first half hour).
  • Your hourly rate, and your after-hours and weekend rates.
  • Typical ranges for common jobs: a tap washer, a blocked drain, a hot water cylinder replacement.
  • Whether prices include GST and parts.
  • When you give fixed-price quotes, and how.

Write each answer as a short, direct paragraph under a heading that matches the question, such as “How much is a plumber per hour in Dunedin?” or “What is our call-out fee?”. Add related questions Google shows, such as whether you need a licensed plumber to install a toilet (in New Zealand, sanitary plumbing is restricted work under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006) and when a dripping tap is an emergency. Clear, local, factual answers are what AI Overviews and “People also ask” pick up.

You do not have to be the cheapest. Being the plumber who explains prices clearly is often enough to get the call.

5. Service pages, starting with bathrooms

Routes A and B · one-off build, grow over time

“Bathroom renovation dunedin” is searched as often as “plumber dunedin”, and the job is worth many callouts. Build a page for it, with real before-and-after photos, then add pages for emergencies, hot water cylinders, leak detection, drains and gas fitting.

Read the full breakdown
  • Bathroom renovations: the process, who does what (plumber, tiler, electrician), typical timeframes, a project gallery, and how you work in older Dunedin homes.
  • Emergency plumber: what counts as an emergency, how fast you respond, your after-hours number, and what to do while waiting, such as where to find the water main shut-off.
  • Hot water cylinders: signs of failure, replacement options, heat pump water heating, typical costs.
  • Leak detection and blocked drains: the equipment you use and how you avoid unnecessary damage.
  • Areas: a Mosgiel and Taieri page only if you genuinely cover it well; “plumbers mosgiel” is searched on its own.

Use your own photos throughout. For the technical side of building and ranking these pages, see our SEO services in NZ.

6. Make it clear which Dunedin

All routes · one-off

Dunedin, Florida, has its own plumbing company, and its emergency page appeared in our New Zealand search results. Tell Google clearly that you are in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand: in page titles, on your contact page and in your business details.

Read the full breakdown
  • Use “Dunedin” together with “Otago” or “NZ” in your home page title and footer.
  • Show your full New Zealand address and a +64 or 03 phone number on every page.
  • Name local suburbs and landmarks on your service pages: Mosgiel, South Dunedin, Roslyn, St Kilda.
  • Add local business structured data to your website with your NZ address. Your web developer or SEO provider can do this in an hour.

The Florida result showed a “Missing: NZ” note, a sign that Google was unsure. Every clear local signal you add removes that doubt in your favour.

7. Show you are registered

Routes B and C · one-off

Customers want to know they are letting a qualified tradesperson into their home. Show your registration and licence with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board, and any memberships such as Master Plumbers. “Master plumbers dunedin” is searched on its own.

Read the full breakdown
  • Put your registration or licence details on your website, with a link to the public register so customers can check.
  • Mention certified gas fitting and drainlaying where it applies. Many customers do not know they are separate qualifications.
  • Show memberships, guarantees and insurance clearly. They answer “What are some reputable plumbers in New Zealand?” before the customer has to ask.
  • A member directory listing also gives your website a trusted link.

8. Be the plumber locals name

All routes · daily check, ten minutes

Google gives plumbing searches a whole “Discussions and forums” block, filled with Facebook and Reddit threads where Dunedin people recommend plumbers by name. Watch the local groups, answer helpfully, and ask happy customers to mention you when a friend asks.

In the threads we found, locals asked for a cheap but efficient plumber, a reliable plumber, and help with an urgent shower mixer repair. Replies named specific Dunedin firms, and some plumbers answered directly with their phone number. The recommended names then appear in Google’s own results, attached to real people’s experiences.

Join the main Dunedin community and business groups, follow the rules, and reply with useful information rather than an advert. A short, honest answer (“for a mixer that age, it’s usually a cartridge; we can often do same day”) earns more trust than a sales pitch.

9. Directories, lists and partners

Routes B and C · one-off, review twice a year

A MoneyHub list of the best plumbers in Dunedin and a White Pages directory both rank on page one. Trade platforms, builders, property managers and real estate agents send steady work. Each listing or recommendation is extra visibility and a local link.

Read the full breakdown
  • Lists and directories: White Pages, Finda, trade platforms such as Builderscrack and NoCowboys. Find out how “best plumbers” lists choose businesses; strong reviews usually matter most.
  • Builders and renovators: bathroom and kitchen projects need a reliable plumber. A recommended-trades mention on their website is a strong signal.
  • Property managers: rental properties need fast, reliable callouts. One good relationship can bring dozens of jobs a year.
  • Suppliers: some suppliers and cylinder brands list installers. Ask at your trade counter.

Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere.

10. Quotes, ads and measurement

Route C · every enquiry, monthly review

For planned jobs, the plumber whose clear quote arrives first often wins. For urgent jobs, ads can work, but clicks cost up to NZ$12, so target tightly. Track where every call comes from.

Quote and Job Organiser app settings screen with trade presets including Plumbing

We built Quote & Job Organiser for tradespeople who quote on site. It already has a Plumbing trade preset: save your own rates, create a professional quote in a couple of minutes, and turn accepted quotes into scheduled jobs. It was built first for Australia; we adapt it for New Zealand quickly on request, including 15% GST. It is in closed testing now, so get in touch if you would like to try it.

  • Ads: focus on emergency and high-value searches in the suburbs you serve, schedule them for the hours you actually answer, and exclude job and DIY searches.
  • Measure: ask every customer how they found you, and check calls and website clicks in your Google profile monthly.

6 Dunedin plumbers and what to copy

We looked at how six Dunedin plumbers appear on Google in September 2026. Each shows a lesson any plumbing business can use. Ratings, review counts and hours are as shown on Google at the time.

1. Foleys Dunedin

Kenmure · 4.5 from 508 Google reviews · 90+ years in business · open 24 hours

Foleys Dunedin Google profile with 508 reviews, open 24 hours and a detailed services list
Source: Google, September 2026.

What works: the most reviews in the city by far, 24-hour hours on the profile, a detailed services list, an online appointments link, and photos of real jobs. Its name is searched around 500 times a month, and locals recommend it on Reddit.

Copy this: a complete profile used as a booking tool, not just a listing. Services, hours, booking link and real photos all in place.

2. iPlump NZ

Mosgiel · 5.0 from 45 Google reviews · open 24 hours

iPlump NZ Google profile in Mosgiel with a 5.0 rating from 45 reviews and open 24 hours
Source: Google, September 2026.

What works: in the top three next to firms with far more reviews, thanks to a perfect rating, 24-hour availability and “Emergency Plumber Service” shown under its name. It is also named in local Facebook recommendation threads, and its website ranks for “plumber dunedin”.

Copy this: proof that a younger business can compete. Excellent service, reviews that say so, and emergency availability stated clearly.

3. Wright Plumbing and Drainage

Fairfield · 5.0 from 84 Google reviews · 30+ years in business

Wright Plumbing and Drainage Google profile with a 5.0 rating and photos of a hot water cylinder and tiled showers
Source: Google, September 2026.

What works: a perfect rating across 84 reviews, and lead photos that sell bigger jobs: a new hot water cylinder and finished, tiled showers. A review quoted under the listing praises “job done same day”.

Copy this: lead with photos of your best finished work. Bathroom photos attract bathroom enquiries.

4. Blair McNab Plumbing

Belleknowes · 4.9 from 70 Google reviews · first on mobile for “plumber”

Blair McNab Plumbing Google profile with a 4.9 rating from 70 reviews
Source: Google, September 2026.

What works: led the mobile results for the plain search “plumber” in Dunedin, with a 4.9 rating. A quoted review says the work was “finished as quoted”, exactly what customers worry about.

Opportunity: the lead photos look like general stock-style images. Photos of real vans, jobs and people would add the personal proof the reviews already promise.

5. Barry Dell Plumbing

The Glen · 4.2 from 68 Google reviews · 30+ years · open 24 hours

Barry Dell Plumbing Google profile with 68 reviews, open 24 hours and a services list
Source: Google, September 2026.

What works: one of the best-known names in Dunedin plumbing: searched by name around 500 times a month. 24-hour hours, a services list and branded vehicles support that brand.

Opportunity: the review summary shows a noticeable share of one-star ratings. Calm, specific replies and a fresh flow of reviews from happy customers would lift the rating to match the reputation.

6. Laser Plumbing Dunedin Central

South Dunedin · 4.6 from 70 Google reviews · 15+ years

Laser Plumbing Dunedin Central Google profile with 70 reviews and branded vans
Source: Google, September 2026.

What works: a dedicated “Emergency Plumber Dunedin 24 Hours” page that ranks organically for emergency searches, plus a national brand behind the local team and branded vans in the photos.

Opportunity: the website promises service 24 hours a day, but the Google profile showed “Closed · Opens 8 AM” when we checked. Matching the profile hours to the website would put it in front of night-time searchers.

Common mistake

Promising 24/7 on the website while the Google profile says “Closed”. The customer with a flooded laundry at 11 pm never sees the website; they see the profile, and they call someone else.

A worked scenario

A two-van plumbing business in St Kilda with 25 reviews, generic photos and no bathroom page (Route B). They list every service on their profile, set honest after-hours times, add a pricing page and a bathroom renovation page with ten real projects, and ask for a review after each of their 60 jobs a month. If one in four customers leaves a review, they pass 100 reviews in about five months. This is an illustrative scenario, not a client case study or a guaranteed result.

In plumbing, Google rewards the same things customers do: turning up, fixing it, and saying clearly what you charge.

Questions plumbers ask us

How long does it take a Dunedin plumber to rank on Google?

A complete Google profile, honest 24/7 hours and a steady flow of reviews can lift you in the local results within a few months. Ranking a website in the organic top 10 for “plumber dunedin” usually takes six to twelve months of consistent work in this competitive trade.

Should plumbers show 24 hours on their Google profile?

Only if someone genuinely answers after hours. If you do take emergency calls, show it on your profile and website in the same way. Customers searching at night often filter by “Open now”, and a profile showing “Closed” is left out.

Should I publish my call-out fee?

Yes. “What is a normal call-out charge for a plumber?” and “How much is a plumber per hour in NZ?” appear on page one for Dunedin plumbing searches. A clear pricing page with your call-out fee, hourly and after-hours rates builds trust and wins price searches.

How many Google reviews does a plumber in Dunedin need?

In September 2026 the Maps leaders had between 45 and 508 reviews. A plumber with 45 five-star reviews was in the top three, so quality and consistency matter as much as volume. Ask after every job and reply to every review.

Is a bathroom renovation page worth building?

Yes, if you do bathroom work. “Bathroom renovation dunedin” is searched around 500 times a month, as often as “plumber dunedin”, and each project is worth far more than a callout. Show real before-and-after photos and explain the process.
