Palmerston North has more than twenty places to rent storage, from big national chains to two locals with a yard full of shipping containers. Prices are harder to pin down: some facilities show a live price, some show a half-price deal, and some ask you to call. This guide compares the storage units in Palmerston North that publish prices, explains what size you need, and includes a calculator that works out the cost of your stay, whether you are a Massey student clearing a flat for summer, a family posted to Linton or someone between houses.
Quick answers
- Small unit (about 1.5 to 2 m²): from $62 a month at Kennards, or $67.50 a month for the first three months on Safeguard’s half-price offer.
- Room or studio (3 × 1.5 m): $147 to $165 a month at full price, published by Kennards and Safeguard in October 2026.

- Shipping containers: Central Self Storage rents 10 ft and 20 ft containers you can back a trailer up to; prices are on request.

Storage size and cost calculator
Choose what you are storing and for how long. The calculator suggests a size, shows the prices Palmerston North facilities publish for that size and works out your total, including Safeguard’s half-price first three months where it applies.
What size storage unit do you need, and what will it cost?
Pick what you are storing and for how long. The calculator suggests a unit size and works out the cost from prices Palmerston North facilities publish online.
Published options in Palmerston North
Prices as shown on the Kennards and Safeguard Palmerston North websites in October 2026, including GST. Kennards shows a live “today’s price” that can change; Safeguard’s half-price offer applies to the first three months on select units only. Central Self Storage quotes its containers on request. Always confirm the price and the unit before you book.
How the calculator works
Sizes follow the guidance storage operators give for common moves: a closet-sized unit for boxes and seasonal gear, about 4.5 m² for a student room, 6 to 8 m² or a 10 ft container for a one or two bedroom flat, and 12 m² upwards for a family home. Central Self Storage describes its 10 ft container as suiting a one or two bedroom home and its 20 ft container as suiting a three to five bedroom home or one vehicle.
Prices are the monthly prices shown on the Kennards and Safeguard Palmerston North pages in October 2026, including GST. For Safeguard, the calculator charges half price for the first three months and full price after that, because that is how its offer is advertised. The “cheapest published option” compares totals for your whole stay, so a half-price deal can win for short stays and lose for long ones. Facilities that quote on request are listed but not counted.
Storage unit prices in Palmerston North
Two of the facilities on the first page of Google publish prices for Palmerston North units: Kennards Self Storage in Milson and Safeguard Self Storage in Kelvin Grove. Here is what they showed in October 2026:
| Unit | Size (floor) | Kennards | Safeguard (full price) | Safeguard, first 3 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large closet or locker | 1.5 m² to 2.25 m² | $62 (1.5 × 1.0 m) | $135 (1.5 × 1.5 m) | $67.50 |
| Walk-in robe | 4.5 m² | $147 (3.0 × 1.5 m) | $165 (3 × 1.5 m) | $82.50 |
| Small room | 6 m² | $167 (3.0 × 2.0 m) | $130 (2 × 3 m, outside access) | $65 |
| Half garage | 8 m² | $200 (4.0 × 2.0 m) | Not shown | Not shown |
| Single car garage | 18 m² | $314 (6.0 × 3.0 m, drive-up) | Not shown | Not shown |
Kiwi tip: price per square metre tells the real story
Small units cost more per square metre. At Kennards, the 1.5 m² closet works out at about $41 per m² a month, while the 18 m² garage is about $17 per m². If you are torn between two sizes, the bigger one often costs only a little more, and lets you stack less and reach things more easily.
Read more: why the Safeguard 2 × 3 m unit is cheaper than a smaller one
On Safeguard’s listing, the 6 m² unit (2 × 3 m) costs less than the 4.5 m² unit (3 × 1.5 m). The difference is access: the larger one opens from outside, the smaller one is inside the building. Outside units are usually cheaper and easier for loading from a trailer, while inside units are better protected from weather and dust. Ask which you are getting before you compare prices.
Kennards also mentions private lockers on its Palmerston North page “for as little as 1 dollar per day”, and Central Self Storage lists only two sizes of container, 10 ft and 20 ft, with prices on request. Its website calls itself “Palmerston North’s most competitive self storage facility”.
What size storage unit do you need?
| What you are storing | Size to ask for | Common names |
|---|---|---|
| Boxes, bikes, camping gear, a few small items | 1.5 to 2.25 m² | Locker, large closet, extra small |
| A student room or studio: bed, desk, boxes | About 4.5 m² (3 × 1.5 m) | Walk-in robe, small |
| A one or two bedroom flat | 6 to 8 m², or a 10 ft container | Half garage, medium |
| A three bedroom house | 12 to 15 m², or a 20 ft container | Large, garage |
| A four or five bedroom house | 18 m² or more | Single car garage, extra large |
| A car | About 18 m² with drive-up access | Single car garage, vehicle storage |
- Measure the big pieces. A queen bed base, a couch and a fridge set the minimum size more than boxes do.
- Leave a walkway if you will need things out during your stay.
- Use the operators’ tools. Safeguard has a space calculator and Kennards a size filter on their websites.
Summer storage for Massey and UCOL students
Every year, students leave Palmerston North flats at the end of the second semester and come back in February. Rather than paying summer rent or hauling furniture home, many share a small unit with flatmates.
- Book early. Small units go first at the end of the year. On Kennards’ listing, several popular sizes already showed “5 spaces left” in October.
- Split the cost. Three flatmates sharing a 3 × 2 m unit at $167 a month pay under $56 each.
- Time it with an offer. A summer break is about three months, which matches “half price for the first three months” offers exactly. Check the terms: they apply to select units only.
- Check your contents insurance. Some policies cover belongings in storage, some don’t. Ask the facility what it offers if yours doesn’t.
Families posted to Linton Military Camp or RNZAF Base Ohakea move at the same time of year. If that is you, check what your relocation arrangements cover before you pay for storage privately. Our guide to SEO in Palmerston North explains how these seasons shape demand across the city.
How to choose a storage facility in Palmerston North
Most facilities are clustered around Milson, Kelvin Grove and the industrial area near the airport, with others in Longburn, Feilding and Ashhurst. Ratings are high almost everywhere, so compare the practical details.
- Access hours. Kennards offers 24/7 access; Safeguard and Central Self Storage allow access from 6am to 10pm every day. Office hours are shorter: Safeguard’s office is open 9am to 2.30pm on weekdays only.
- Drive-up or inside. Drive-up units and containers are easiest with a trailer; inside units are better for furniture, documents and anything that dislikes damp.
- Security. Look for gated entry with a personal PIN, CCTV and individual unit alarms. Several local facilities list all three.
- Contract terms. Ask about the minimum stay, notice period and whether the price changes after an introductory offer.
- Extras. Safeguard advertises a free move-in trailer; Kennards and others sell boxes and packing supplies.
- Insurance. Find out whether cover is included, optional or required.
- Recent reviews that mention cleanliness, pests and how staff handle problems.

What you can and can’t store
Every facility sets its own rules, but the common ones are similar: no food or anything perishable, no flammable liquids or gas bottles, no chemicals, no firearms or illegal items, and no living animals. Vehicles usually need to be registered or declared, with fuel at a low level.
You can’t live in a storage unit
“Can you legally sleep in your storage unit?” is one of the questions Google shows for this search. The answer is no: storage agreements forbid it, and units have no ventilation, light, water or fire exits. If you are facing a gap between homes, contact Work and Income about emergency housing help before it becomes urgent.
What Google shows when you search for storage in Palmy
We are a marketing agency, so we also looked at what Google shows someone searching “storage units palmerston north” in October 2026. This is a busy page, and it says a lot about how the market competes.
Ads come first, six of them. Four sponsored results sit above the map and two more below it. One national chain’s ad includes a “Dunedin Storage” link on a Palmerston North search, and its sponsored map listing is for its Ōtaki branch, about an hour’s drive away.

The map belongs to the reviewed. All Secure Self Storage (226 reviews) and Kennards (222) lead the map, both rated 4.9. A local facility with 24 reviews holds the third place.

The organic results are mostly operators. All Secure, Storage NZ, Kennards and Central Storage take the first four places. Further down: a Yelp page rated 1.0 from one review, more operator pages and the “People also ask” questions, none answered with Palmerston North prices.

Not everything on the map is a storage facility. A shop selling storage boxes, listed as a home goods store with 112 reviews, appears in the storage list, alongside two facilities with no reviews at all.

Three Palmerston North storage facilities: a marketing look
We looked at three facilities that appear on page one, the way a customer meets them: Google Maps, their websites and how clearly they answer the price question. Each does something other local businesses can learn from, and each has a clear next step. None of them are our clients. This is a public snapshot from October 2026, written in good faith.
| Facility | Google rating | Prices online | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kennards Self Storage, Jasper Place | 4.9 from 222 reviews | Yes, live “today’s price” | 24 hours, 7 days |
| Safeguard Self Storage, Makomako Road | 4.9 from 22 reviews | Yes, with half-price offer | 6am to 10pm, 7 days |
| Central Self Storage, Mihaere Drive | 4.6 from 24 reviews | No, on request | 6am to 10pm, every day |
1. Kennards: the price list everyone else should copy

What works: the most transparent page in the market. Every unit has its size, features (24 hours, ground floor, drive-up) and a live monthly price, with “5 spaces left” prompts that create honest urgency. Office hours, public holiday hours, a virtual tour and a list of suburbs served are all on one page, and the Google profile backs it up with 222 reviews.
Ideas to grow:
- Lead with the cheapest door in. The page mentions private lockers “for as little as 1 dollar per day” in a paragraph, but the price list opens with a $314 garage. Showing the locker or the $62 closet first would catch price-sensitive searchers, students especially.
- Proofread the story. “The most sort after storage facility” should be “sought after”. Small errors on an otherwise excellent page stand out.
- Say what fits. Unit names such as “Walk-in Robe” and “Half Garage” are clever, but a line like “fits a student room” under each would answer the size question without a separate tool.
- Name the season. A short section for Massey students and Linton postings, with a summer booking deadline, would meet two big local groups at the moment they search.

Biggest opportunity: it already has the prices, reviews and access hours that win this market. Making the cheapest options visible first would bring in customers who currently assume Kennards is out of their budget.
2. Safeguard: the best offer in town, wrapped in loose ends

What works: a strong local landing page: the address in the first line, a clear headline, “Self-Storage Units in Palmerston North”, two big buttons, a free move-in trailer and a real offer, 50% off the first three months on select units. The unit list shows the regular and discounted price for every unit, a space calculator helps with sizing, and a drone video shows the site.
Ideas to grow:
- Make the prices look like New Zealand prices. The unit list displays prices as “67,50$ per month”, a European format. “$67.50 a month” reads as local and trustworthy.
- Fix the broken deals box. When we visited, one section of the page read “Sorry, we were unable to get the deals due to an error.” Visitors see that right above the reasons to choose the branch.
- Answer the price question in the FAQ. “How much does storage cost?” is answered with “get a quote”, while prices are published a few scrolls away. Linking the answer to the price list would help customers and search engines alike.
- One phone number. The page shows a local 06 number and the national 0800 number. Saying which to use for what avoids hesitation. Office hours of 9am to 2.30pm on weekdays also deserve a note on how to book outside them.

Biggest opportunity: more reviews. With 22 reviews against 222 and 226 for the leaders, the offer is strong enough to win; a steady review habit would let the map show it.
3. Central Self Storage: two locals, two sizes, no prices

What works: a business with a face. The cartoon of the two owners, Garry and Tim, with a phone number for each, is memorable in a market of corporate logos. The offer is simple: brand-new 10 ft and 20 ft containers you can drive up to, access from 6am to 10pm every day, and a clear promise of “no frills” storage. People already search for “central storage palmerston north” by name, and Keyword Planner shows no advertiser bids on it.
Ideas to grow:
- Show a price. The site calls itself “Palmerston North’s most competitive self storage facility” and mentions “great deals up to 51%”, but both containers say “contact us for price”. Two published monthly prices would prove the claim in a market where competitors already publish theirs.
- One name. The logo says Central Self Storage, the Google result says Central Storage and the web address is centralstorage.nz. Choosing one name for the site title, profile and listings helps people who search by name.
- Explain the two sizes with real examples. The site already says a 10 ft container suits a one or two bedroom home. Photos of a packed container and a line for students and car owners would sell the simple model.
- Ask for reviews. 24 reviews against more than 200 for the map leaders is the main thing keeping Central out of the top three for its most valuable search.
Biggest opportunity: two prices on the home page. A local, owner-run facility with low overheads is exactly what price-searchers want; they just need to see the number.
Common questions
Based on prices published in October 2026, a small closet-sized unit starts at about $62 a month, a 3 × 1.5 m unit that fits a student room costs $147 to $165 a month, and a 6 × 3 m garage-sized unit costs about $314 a month. Introductory offers such as half price for the first three months can lower the cost of a short stay.
As a rough guide: 1.5 to 2.25 m² for boxes and seasonal gear, about 4.5 m² for a student room or studio, 6 to 8 m² or a 10 ft container for a one or two bedroom flat, 12 to 15 m² or a 20 ft container for a three bedroom house, and 18 m² or more for a larger home or a car.
No. Storage agreements forbid living in a unit, and units have no ventilation, light, water or fire exits. If you are between homes, contact Work and Income about emergency housing help.
Yes. Kennards Self Storage in Milson advertises access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Safeguard and Central Self Storage allow access from 6am to 10pm every day. Check access hours before you book if you work shifts or plan to move at night.
Any self-storage facility will take student belongings. A shared 3 × 2 m unit split between three flatmates costs under $56 each a month at published prices. Book before the end of the second semester, when small units fill up, and check whether a three-month introductory offer covers your break.
